We are a registered Non Profit Making UK charity (Reg No 1067317)
Our story started when Heather Purser visited Kenya on a ministry trip in 1996 after graduating from Bible College. She was deeply moved seeing children trying to survive by eating the contents of fly-infested dustbins in Nairobi and watched their despair as they inhaled solvent glue or petrol to numb the pain of their hunger. When she witnessed the death of a very young child in his own waste, she felt called to do something practical for these children. This was the start of Hope Family Homes' first home, 'Bethlehem', "Nyumba ya Mikate" based in Limuru 23 miles Northwest of Nairobi International airport. Bethlehem in Hebrew means "House of Bread" translated as "Nyumba ya Mkate" in Kiswahili.
In 1997 we registered Correct Ministries as a charity in the UK and subsequently our name was changed to Hope Family Homes as it describes more concisely our ministry and vision to expand.
In 2000 Correct was finally registered as a Kenyan NGO followed by the approval and registration as a CCI (Charitable Children's Institution) by the Kenyan government.
In 2008 we were able to purchase a plot of land and Bethlehem "Nyumba ya Mikate" was established.
The children in our care now have access to a good education, clean water and a healthy diet. Hope family Homes has given them hope, a stable family environment and emotional support.
The home is run on a small holding basis, teaching self-sufficiency and life skills.
The home has now been handed over to a Kenyan run Childrens home called Fountain of Hope.
Hope Family Homes are committed to sponsor the education of the former Bethlehem children. This works by paying the school fees term by term. We hope to continue paying these fees, with your help, for the next four years at least.
To date the only administration costs in the UK are for audit of accounts.
